What's It All About?
About a year ago it became apparent that many clients both new to the agency and those who had spent some time in the 'system' were not fully aware of the services available. An existing client responded by writing a pamphlet outlining those services, which proved to be very useful and popular with both clients and staff.
Birth of a Magazine
While working on the above, it became apparent that the combination of the Who's Who and What's It All About would be enhanced by other information and contributions that had been introduced on the notice-board, coffee table and in conversation in the common room. In order to bring this all together in an accessible and attractive format it was suggested a magazine and it was agreed to 'float' the idea at the forthcoming DHI AGM. A mock up was produced (in double-quick time and with some significant obstacles!) and presented to the board where it received unanimous assent and offers of support.
Inaugural Issue
It was soon realised that the central ethos of the magazine was that it should be "by clients for clients" and therefore depended on client support. In order to engender support, contributions and commitment to the running of the magazine a 'show-case' edition should be produced as a trial run to give everyone an opportunity to see what they would be getting involved insignificant client contributions complemented the editorial input.
Media Attention
The Bath Chronicle became aware of the publication through interviews with DHI clients to produce a series of pieces they ran about support agencies in Bath.
The BBC (Points West) became aware of the Chronicle article and a filmed interview was screened just prior to the official launch of the first issue held on 24th March. The launch party was a success attended by many clients, staff, board members, media and our patron Midge Ure. A follow up article in the Chronicle was also printed.
Contributor Loyalty and Commitment
It is extremely encouraging to note that there is continuing support and enthusiasm from clients and staff for the magazine, and that there is ongoing commitment from previous contributors and interest from new ones who have 'come on board'. There are a few "hard-core diehards" who continue to turn up to production meetings making them stimulating and frequently enjoyable. There are also numerous regular contributors and consultants who work unseen but are nevertheless equally valued.
The Future
It is to be hoped that further funding could be made available in order to safeguard printing costs and ensure the continuation of this popular publication. With sufficient support it could be possible to print in colour and really make this an attractive endeavour for clients wishing to engage in a meaningful occupation where they can learn new skills or dust off and refresh "old" ones. To maintain continuity and support for the magazine, a more formal approach may need to be considered, establishing a coherent project status. It may also be an option to extend the readership and contributor base.
